Legislature Back in Session; Don't Forget to Register for 2019 Advocacy Breakfast!

January 9, 2019

Today, January 9, the Nebraska Legislature begins its 2019 session. This is a long session tentatively scheduled to adjourn on June 6. State lawmakers will introduce new legislation through January 23, as hundreds of new bills are expected. Of the 49-senator legislative body, 13 are newly elected and will be navigating the ropes for the first time. Pieces of legislation already buzzed about include property tax relief, implementation of Medicaid expansion, and the specifics of the state’s revenue stream.

Among the many new bills this year, the NMA will be bringing legislation:

1) to properly fund the Nebraska Coalition for Patient Safety
2) to allow physicians and osteopathic physicians the opportunity to withhold their address from the county assessor’s website
3) to expand Nebraska’s peer review protection laws.

The NMA will read through all legislation that impacts the profession of medicine and will keep members informed on those issues. Members will be emailed NMA’s STAT for legislative updates, which will include notices of upcoming committee hearings and the NMA’s position on key bills. This information is also available on the Members Only section of our website. Your engagement and feedback on legislation is always welcomed and encouraged. For any questions or comments on legislation, please contact Meghan Chaffee, JD, at
